what are they, should you still use them? The meta description tag is sometimes used as the text displayed on a search result page, but it is not used for scoring purposes. I recommend creating attention grabbing meta description phrases on your key pages.
I don't use the keyword meta tag as the major search engines don't use them for ranking purposes. Keep in mind none are essential for a properly functioning page. However, some i do use are:
[code:1:f01b244d9c]<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=iso-8859-1">[/code:1:f01b244d9c]
Allows browsers to render text appropriately
[code:1:f01b244d9c]<META name="author" content="me">[/code:1:f01b244d9c] Give proper credit to a site
[code:1:f01b244d9c]<META name="generator" content="Netpaths">[/code:1:f01b244d9c] Coppyright protection - announcement
[code:1:f01b244d9c]<meta http-equiv="imagetoolbar" content="no" />[/code:1:f01b244d9c] Keeps the annoying Internet Explorer 6 image resizer from appearing in images
[code:1:f01b244d9c]<meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="true" />[/code:1:f01b244d9c] Keep Microsoft from hijacking the links on my pages.
