it is possible to force google to use your meta tags for your website description in the search result pages.
<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOSNIPPET">
One adverse effect is you will remove your site from the cache.

| Is there any downside to that? I know you won't be able to tell which version of your site is in the index because you won't be able to see the cache, but anything else? Does Google frown on that? |

The main disadvantages to having your description tailor made is that your site will not be in the google cache, and keywords will not be highlighted in the search results. I recommend testing this out on interior pages first and if you get good results, use it for the index page.
This has the potential to let astute webmasters / copywriters improve conversions. Who knows how long it will last however. |
