It is my understanding that Google does not "want" more than 20 links posted on a single page. It is also my understanding that a direct link from the site's main page, to the site's link page is very important. My question is: If one separates 100 links into 3-4 pages, how should one set a link from a site's main/entry page to the multiple link pages?

I hope my question makes sense. I am wondering if, for example, a person's best option is to post numerous links on the main page that say something to the effect of "Link Page A," "Link Page B," "Link Page C" etc....

THANKS!

Hi Link Lady,

For some time now the numbers of links one should have per page has been a topic of discussion and most have settled on about 40/page as the max number one should have.
My own experiences have shown, over the past 3+ years full time in the linking biz, that it ultimately doesn't matter that much if you have 20 or 40 or so on... it does place less value on the amount of PageRank you give to your partners, but whereas your site is concerned it really doesn't matter that much. The more page you have on your site the better in most cases within the SEs and generally speaking your link partner titles and descriptions will help to optimize the individual links pages...

Google does now say NOT to have more than 100 links on a page - this includes your onsite links to your other pages. We tell our clients, and as a practice with our own sites when we have a couple of minutes to work on them, to try and keep the number at 50 or below just to be safe, but I have been told by a very reliable source that if Google says 100 then anything below that is a safe bet.

Linking to the links pages from the main page is sure-fire way that the links page will be picked up by the SE spiders. This is in part why many people won't link to sites that fail to link to their links pages from the main or index page... ultimately, again this is something that doesn't necessarily matter as long as the pages that you are linking to the links page are indexable and the link to the links page can be followed by the SE's spiders.
Many potential link partners also want to see a link to the links page from the main page as it provides the perception that people will visit the links page and follow the link back to their site to buy something; which can and does happen, but that's another story...

The more links to the links page from your other pages will insure that the links page gets a decent PageRank too, which makes higher quality sites want to link to you in a recip exchange.
One thing to keep in mind is the way you link your pages to each other - link less often to those pages that you don't care so much about, i.e. your about us page; and link more frequently to the pages that you do, i.e. your sales page, articles page, etc... You would be surprised at how beneficial it can be to your site by putting a little thought behind your internal link architecture as opposed to linking to every page from every page...

Back to your question... you could of course link to each link page from the main page... this is probably a good idea, especially if the links pages are new and haven't really been indexed. It's not going to hurt anything to just keep it that way once they have been indexed either... just try and keep the number of links inbound to the main page greater than the number of links you have coming out of the main page.
Another and potentially better alternative would be to link to the links pages from pages within your site which hold some similiar relevance to the link page in particular - for instance, if your "links page A" had links to web hosting sites then in an ideal situation lets say you also have an article on your site about web hosting. Link those two pages to each other and of course from other pages as well if it makes sense to the overall theme of your site... and so on...

Hopefully I've helped shed some light on your question... I'm not feeling overly articulate this evening but would be game to discuss this more later if need be...

best,
john

You might be thinking about other peoples linking policys. When implementing links, the only focus should be on the value to the visitors and relevance to the site. If your site is about garden hoses and you provide links to casinos, the value of those links is questionable.

It is best to consider your target theme, and you will be rewarded with good placement.
